For a dark room, choose a blackout roller blind. For a softer look, Roman blinds with a blackout lining work well. Zebra blinds suit people who like to adjust the light rather than block it completely.

Inside the recess gives a neat, built-in look but needs enough depth. Fitting outside — on the wall or ceiling above — covers the whole opening, blocks more light at the edges and can make the window look bigger. We check your window depth during the visit and suggest the best option.

Pick a material that handles moisture and wipes clean, such as a roller blind in a moisture-resistant fabric. Avoid real wood and natural bamboo in steamy areas, as moisture can warp or discolour them.

Most types can be fitted with a motor and controlled with a remote, an app or a voice assistant. Tell us early if you'd like motors, so any wiring can be planned before painting or false-ceiling work is finished.
